The Cocktails In Thailand Look Very Appealing

It took me a while to appreciate a decent cocktail. In Europe cocktails are quiet expensive and I considered myself always more a beer-guy then a cocktail-man. But something about the tropical climate, the beach, sunsets and the lifestyle of good living and getting the max out of it, now sometimes makes me spend a lazy late-afternoon sipping cocktails until the sun sets down. I try out new cocktails with the craziest names, figuring out what cocktail suits me best.

And they look good, don’t you think?

Morning Breakfast In Kamala Beach

One of the great things about Kamala is the slow awaking of the village. I like to enjoy my morning coffee on the balcony of my apartment, overlooking the village and the mountains. The morning dew ascends from the hills, while the sun quickly increases in power. Sometimes you hear the monkeys playing, and I imagine them chasing each other in the palm trees.

It’s only a very short walk or drive from my apartment to the beach, so most mornings I first drink my coffee on the balcony, then get a quick shower, and head to the beach for a nice and relaxed morning breakfast.

A good place to have breakfast are the restaurants on Kamala Beach. Some serve muesli, toast or other Western breakfast. Others serve Thai menus, like a Phad Thai or Fried Rice.

But whatever I fancy that morning, I always like a nice fruitjuice cocktail with my breakfast. Watermelon with crushed ice, mango juice mixed with oranges, or a ginger carrot juice if I need an energy boost for that day’s activities. They prepare the fruit juice from fresh ingredients. Just like everything else they’ll serve you it is made on spot with ingredients bought that very day.

Woken up and eaten well, the day started good again. Time to get the motorbike and head for new adventures.

The big succes of the movie Hangover Part II makes a rise in tourism to Thailand expected

The Hangover Part II grossed $118.1 million in the United States in its first four days after release. Most of the movie was shot in the Chinatown area of Bangkok. The beach scenes were shot at Krabi, which is the neighbouring province on the maindland of the island province Phuket.

The movie does not depict Thailand always in it’s the most positive way and the scenes with the monk and the monkey did people wonder how the movie script made it through the Thai censory board. Before release some critics even suggested that the movie was paid for by a competitor tourist destination.

After release of the movie in the worldwide cinemas comments on Twitter and Facebook were largely positive. Though some of the commentators were attracted by the darker scenes of the Bangkok nightlife, a huge crowd commented to want to book a trip to Thailand ‘NOW!’., largely because of the scenes with the pristine beaches and the general beauty and cultural heritage of the Thai Kingdom.

My Favorite Kamala Phuket Restaurants: The Rockfish Restaurant

One of my favorite places in Kamala Beach for a morning cappucino, a nice lunch or an early cocktail is the Rockfish Restaurant. The Rockfish Restaurant is located on the south end of Kamala Beach. When you drive the searoad leading into the hills of south Kamala towards the Millionaires Mile it’s at your right hand just before the Andara Resort.

One of the best features of the Rockfish is the semi open-air layout, where you can enjoy a gentle ocean breeze and are protected from the sun while you are enjoying your food and drinks. The restaurant has a nice view on Kamala Beach and the rise and tide of the Andaman Sea. I love to watch the fishermen prepare their boats in the late morning and see the beach come to life with people jogging besides the shore.

The kitchen is good and serves a mixture of Thai and Western food, with menu items like scallops wrapped in proscuitto, warm asparagus salad with rose apple puree or the roast duck & crisp vegetable wrapped in rice paper, lime & soya sauce. My favorite starter or lunch item is the blue swimmer crab & mango salad with chili peanuts & shaved coconut. Personally I prefer their starters above their main courses, but one of their main courses I can really recommend is the grilled grouper fillet with warm nicoise vegetables & lemongrass dressing.

It’s not one of the budget places of Kamala, but not one in the highest range, neither. I like the laid back atmosphere which combines great service with  great food. The interior is modern Thai style and the place is generally not too crowded, so a seat with view is almost guaranteed.

Phuket Wheater Forecast: Thunderstorms Continue, Shopping And Movie-Going Advised

The weather forecast for Phuket continues to see Thunderstorms untill at least the end of the week. It is advised to cancel any trips to the islands and be careful when swimming in the sea. Nice day activities could be some shopping in the malls in Jungceylon in Patong or Big C in Phuket, catching a 3D movie in the excellent Phuket movie theaters.

Daily Food Buying On The Kamala Markets

Everyday there are local markets in the town of Kamala. South near the road going to Patong there are markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This is where the local people go to buy their food and sell the food they harvested in the daytime. Local fishermen sell the catch of the day, and you will find many Mam and Pop shops selling sweets, BBQ steaks and a lot of fresh food. It is a busy market where you will be welcomed and seduced in trying to eat new food. The Thai people are really proud on their kitchen, as they should be!

Best is to take the car or motorbike when you go to the market, you will be buying a lot of things, as they are giving it away practically free!

In the north of Kamala there is a daily market, too. When you drive to Surin Beach in the north and pass Phuket’s famous themepark Phuket Fantasea you will find a daily market more focussed on clothes, DVDs, shoes and such. But of course also here there is a lot of mouthwatering food seducing you. Lovers of Japanese food will find that the Thai people love their sushi freshly made. You can choose from simple classic sushis to elaborate Thai / Japanese fushion sushi.

When I first came to Thailand I found fruits I did not see before and whose names were foreign to me. Now they belong to my favorites, such as the colourful Dragonfruit.

Also I am real lover of Mangosteen.

In the United States and Europe Mangosteen is sold as a treatment for all kind of diseases, labeled ‘Superfruit’ by foodies and those who pursuit a healthy living. Here in Kamala it’s part of my daily food, delicious, sweet and soft I mix it with serieals or joghurt or just eat them like a snack when I come home from the beach.

Cooking Duck & Lychee Curry After Shopping The Kamala Markets

Having your own apartment to stay while on holidays in Kamala has several benefits like savings in costs and more privacy. One other benefit is that you are able to prepare and cook your own meals. Great places to shop for Western food are the Tesco Lotus near Surin Beach and Carrefour in Patong. Here you will find all neccesities and also a lot more.

If you are looking to prepare your own Thai food there are several cooking schools on Phuket. It’s worth a try.

A simple but tasty meal you can prepare yourself without going to school is Duck & Lychee Thai Curry. If you visit the Kamala Markets in the afternoon you will be able to buy all ingredients in about 15 minutes. Also the TescoLotus and Carrefour provide for all the following ingredients. Preparation of the menu and the cooking itself won’t cost you more than half an hour.

When you visit the day markets, just put the following items on your shopping list if you serve about 4 people:

- Sunflower Oil. You will need about 1,5 tablespoon. There are several market shops that sell oil and items like sugar, salt and ketchup

- Coconut Milk. You will need about 400 ml, normally to be found at the same shop where they sell the sunflower oil.

- Fish Sauce. You will need about 2,5 tablespoons and you can buy it at the same shop.

- Sugar. In that same shop you can choose from a variety of sugars, from coconut sugar to clear crystal sugar to palm sugar or brown sugar. You can also choose to add honey instead of sugar. You will need about 20 grams.

- Red Curry. Each market has about three shops selling curries and pastes in open bags. You will need 2-3 tablespoons of Red Curry for this meal.

- Roasted Duck. The ducks can be found at the butcher’s, normally at the back of the market. You need about half a kilo (500 grams) of chopped roasted duck, you can ask the butcher to prepare it for you.

- Cherry Tomatoes. You will need about 4, but please take the time to indulge yourself in buying fresh fruits at the same shop where you will find the tomatoes. Try a taste if you are not sure if you like the fruits or not, the sellers will be happy to help you out.

- Kaffir Lime Leaves. You will find them in the vegetable shop. You will need about 3 leaves for this menu.

- Lychees. You need about 600 grams and can buy them in the fruit stall. You need to take the hard skin off before cooking, or you can buy a can of 425 gram in the TescoLotus or Carrefour.

- Bottled Water. You can buy the water at the market or at your local 7/11.

When you are all set and brought the items back to your apartment, you are ready to cook. Heat the sunflower oil to medium heat in a wok, put the curry paste inside and stir-fry it for about 4 minutes. Then put the duck in the wok and stir it again. After 4 minutes you can add the coconut milk, water, fish sauce and sugar untill the sugar is dissolved (about 3 minutes). Then you add the lychees, tomatoes and kaffir limes. Only heat them up a little bit, in a few seconds it’s ready to serve to friends and family, preferrably with some rice. Cooked rice can be bought in the markets, too.

Enjoy your meal!
